A Foodie's Guide to the South Hams
South Devon's food scene runs from harbourside seafood to century-old pubs, and almost all of it sits within a short drive of Wicket View. We can’t claim to be foodie’s but we’ve certainly found a few places we love to eat. Here's where to eat well during your stay.
Rockfish, Salcombe Overlooking the harbour, Rockfish is the relaxed, no-reservations-needed seafood spot from Devon chef Mitch Tonks — sustainably sourced fish and chips, plus a full seafood menu, best enjoyed at one of the outdoor tables watching the boats.
The Crab Shed, Salcombe Small, but bursting with flavour and any kind of crab dish you could imagine. All locally sourced from local Fishermen and landed in the Quay for the freshest catch of the day.
The Victoria Inn, Salcombe A traditional pub on Fore Street with a strong local reputation for its food, The Victoria Inn is also dog-friendly, making it a good stop after a coastal walk. Expect proper pub classics done well, alongside a solid drinks list. The fish and chips here were huge!
The Pilchard Inn, Burgh Island One of Devon's oldest pubs, dating to the 14th century, the Pilchard Inn sits right on Burgh Island itself. Reachable on foot at low tide or by sea tractor when the water's in, it's as much about the setting and history as the menu — a proper Devon pint with a view worth the detour.
Salcombe Distilling Co. Not a restaurant, but worth a stop for anyone who enjoys a good gin — book a tour and tasting overlooking the harbour, or pick up a bottle to take back to the cottage for the evening.
Salcombe Dairy For dessert, Salcombe Dairy's ice cream is a local institution — a stop that works equally well after a beach day or a wander around town.
Kingsbridge, for something closer to home Closer to Wicket View, Kingsbridge's Fore Street has a good spread of independent cafés and places to eat, worth exploring on a market town morning out without needing to drive all the way to the coast. Two of our favourites are: The Crab Shell, great for people watching, right on the quay and homemade pizzas to die for or Seven Stars, a traditional pub with a great atmosphere. Looking for breakfast options, you have to try Fika or The Creaks end Inn. both within walking distance of Wicket View.
Yeowards Boatyards, Salcombe If you’re looking to enjoy a luxury meal at home and Crab of Lobster is your thing, we cannot recommend Yeowards Boatyards enough, Terry will cook it for you, so you don’t have to worry about the smell… but you will have to prepare the crab or lobster yourself. Wicket View has everything you need to enjoy a luxury dinner at home.
Bringing it back to the cottage Several of these spots — Salcombe Distilling Co. and Kingsbridge's food shops in particular — are worth a stop on your way back, giving you the makings of a proper evening in with local produce rather than eating out every night. For take away options click here.
