South West Coast Path: Circular Walks from Salcombe to Hope Cove

This stretch of the South West Coast Path is one of the best short circular walks in the South Hams, and it starts less than 20 minutes from Wicket View.

The route Starting at Bolberry Down, a National Trust car park with sweeping views out to sea, the path follows the clifftop coast path towards Hope Cove. It's a well-signed, moderate walk with some undulating sections, but nothing technical — allow 2–3 hours at an easy pace with stops for photos.

What you'll see along the way Expect dramatic clifftop views for most of the route, wildflowers through spring and summer, and a good chance of spotting seabirds along the cliffs. The path drops down gradually towards Hope Cove, with the double cove and its fishing-village charm coming into view as you descend.

Hope Cove itself A picturesque spot with two beaches and a handful of places to eat, Hope Cove is the natural halfway point — a good excuse for a pub lunch or an ice cream before either retracing your steps or continuing the loop back to Bolberry Down.

Extending the walk For those wanting more, the coast path continues further towards Thurlestone and Bantham in one direction, or towards Salcombe in the other — both make for a longer day if you're after more distance.

• Wear proper footwear — sections can be muddy or uneven after rain

• Bring layers; clifftop weather can shift quickly even on a fine day

• Check tide times if you plan to combine the walk with beach time at Hope Cove

Getting there from Wicket View Bolberry Down is a short, scenic drive from the cottage, making this an easy morning walk with the rest of the day still free for the beach or exploring Salcombe.
